Lilies are some of the most beautiful plants for the home landscape and they are extremely easy to grow. The following tips will get you started...
#1: Selecting Lilies
Spring Valley
Spend some time selectively choosing the lilies you want to plant according to height, color, and form. The first consideration has to be height. Consider where you are going to place your lilies, what will be planted around them, what will be in bloom while your lilies are blooming, and the right height for the area. Lily flowers can be quite large when they bloom and since they grow together at the top of a long stalk they can be quite spectacular.
That said, they can also block out other blooming plants if you plant taller lilies in front of plants the same or shorter height. If you need something short to go in front of a taller bush then choose a shorter variety, and vice versa if you want something taller to tower above low growing plants or a groundcover.
Next determine the colors that you want. Remember some lilies can be blushed with a second color and some may have speckles that give a more attractive appearance. Also pay attention to when they bloom since different cultivars will bloom at different periods of the season.
Finally, look around at different types of lilies and determine which form you enjoy the most. For instance, you may want cupped or wide open shaped lilies in one area of your property while tiger lilies grow in other areas.
#2: Planting Lilies
Before you start putting your lily bulbs in the ground, consider the best combinations and locations. You should also consider staggering your plantings in each area so that you get a longer overall bloom time. For instance, if you have twenty lily bulbs in one spot you may want to plant them five at a time a week or two apart. This should allow them to bloom a bit apart so you enjoy the flowers over a longer period of time.
When it comes time to put them in the ground, make sure to space them about ten inches apart so they get proper aeration when the plants come up. It is also important to make sure you plant them deep and place them facing the right direction in the hole. When you hold the bulb in your hand you should see it come toward a point on one end with the other end being rounded or more flat. You want to put the bulb with that pointed end facing up as that is where the stem will eventually grow up.
You want to do your planting in the fall, which gives your lilies the entire winter season to dig into the ground and grow well established, strong routes before active growing season begins. Depending on the time of year that your chose lily cultivars bloom, you can expect to see growth coming up in early spring to mid-summer.
Chances are you will notice some of your lilies coming up prior to the last frost for your area. Don't' worry about this. They know what they are doing and will survive just fine!
#3: Enjoying Lilies
Lilies can make excellent cut flowers and are very easy to care for. Once the flowers have completed their show snip them off the top and simply leave the tall stalks as they will build up power and nourishment in the bulb for next year.
